About Josh.

Joshua Sterling in his voice over booth

Hello! I’m Joshua Sterling, a Los Angeles-based actor, but I didn’t start here. I was born in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. I wish that was a much cooler part of my story, but I moved away when I was a toddler. I grew up in a small mountain town about an hour outside of San Diego.

I was a pretty quiet kid, kind of an outsider, so I spent a lot of my time playing video games or watching movies. When I was in junior high, a childhood friend talked me into auditioning for the school play, an adaptation of The Nightmare Before Christmas. That’s when it happened…my life was changed forever. I got the bug. From then on, I was obsessed. I was in every school play. I did what summer performance camps I could. I was even accepted to a super-selective summer program at CalArts for acting. I eventually went to UCSD by way of Grossmont College, studying acting and musical theatre. Despite what my elders advised me, acting was the only plan. What is this ‘Plan B’ you speak of?

Eventually, after a friend offered me his couch, I got on a Greyhound bus with $200 (maybe) in my bank account and no knowledge of there being a difference between Hollywood and North Hollywood.

I got an agent, joined a theatre company, and not much happened for a couple of years. I decided to explore this ‘Plan B’ everyone was talking about and went to audio school. After a two-year program, I had my expert certification in Pro Tools for Post-Production and an internship at a pretty incredible recording studio in Burbank. As an assistant engineer, I got to work with some of the greats like Mark Hamill, Tom Kenny, and so many more. I got to see what happens on the other side of the glass, something that many actors don’t get to see. Like, seriously, you can’t hear the directors in the control room, but I assure you they aren’t talking about you. They’re trying to figure out what they want for lunch.

Since then, my audio career has shifted to focus on trailer/promo audio mixing. I love it. It gets my creative juices flowing. But I’ve also worked on feature films, short films, documentaries, audiobooks, and podcasts. Podcasting includes starting a pretty successful award-winning weekly podcast called Nerd On! The Podcast, where we have hosted the likes of Kevin Conroy, Andrea Romano, Billy West, and many other guests. I was also the audio producer for The CW Television Network’s podcast Mysteries Decoded.

The pandemic was hard for a lot of people - myself included. It was also a wake-up call. I realized that I had put acting on the back burner for way too long and it was time to return. Voice acting was always a dream of mine, so I figured let’s go for the dream. I dug in, taking classes, workshops, and privates with all the people I respected.

So, that’s where we are now. There are a lot more twists and turns in my story but that’s just too long for a website bio.

Oh yeah! I live with my fantastic wife, Bonnie, in our almost hundred-year-old Tudor-style home in Glendale, with our menagerie of pets - three dogs, two cats, and a massive fish tank. In my free time, I like to play video games, watch movies with the wifey, build stuff (ask me about the catio I created - it’s pretty cool), and garden. If I ever ask if I can send you some peach preserves we made from the tree I grew from a seed, just know you’ve reached the hall of fame of my life. A seasonal award, of course.

Acting is my passion and helping others bring THEIR passion to life is the dream - let’s connect. I’m ready to work and let’s have some fun doing it.
